“Bulletproof” BlackBerry Stops Errant Shot

Despite his carry permit, Anthony Holtvogt has been charged with "possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premise" after his gun went off in a Frickers restaurant in Dayton, OH. He could have been charged with involuntary manslaughter, or some other crime, if his date's BlackBerry hadn't stopped an errant bullet from the firearm, though.

Butler Township Police Capt. Carl Bush explained that the incident occurred when Holtvogt was donning his jacket. "While he was adjusting his jacket, he noticed that the slide was back on the gun and then it fired. The bullet did not penetrate the cell phone. [It] bent the cell phone a little bit and made the cell phone unusable. The BlackBerry was in the right place at the right time and the bullet hit her in the right spot."

The incident occurred on Feb. 6th, 2010. No one else was hurt, and the woman suffered just a hole in her pants and a bruise on her leg.
